Taking a complaint further

If you are dissatisfied with how your complaint was handled by the State Government agency, there are organisations that can investigate your complaint further.

The investigation that these organisations might do about your complaint is independent from any review or appeal process that takes place inside the department you are complaining about.

Here are some of the key organisations you can go to if you want to take a complaint further:

State Ombudsman

The main function of the Ombudsman is to investigate complaints about government administration.

You can complain to the Ombudsman about many public sector bodies and office-holders including:

  • state government departments;
  • statutory authorities and corporations;
  • local governments (ie: Cities, Towns and Shires); and
  • public universities

Equal Opportunity Commission

The Equal Opportunity Commission investigates complaints about unlawful discrimination. The Commission deals with any general concerns or questions about rights and responsibilities under equal opportunity laws. You can also lodge a complaint about being discriminated against with the Commission, either for yourself, or on behalf of someone else.

Office of Health Review

The Office of Health Review was set up by Parliament to independently resolve complaints about health and disability services providers. If you have already talked to the service provider, but have not been able to resolve the issue, you may wish to contact the Office of Health Review.
